Assistant City Manager, Vernita Nelson, assists the City Manager in the general operation of the city, including areas of policy decisions, staffing, establishing service levels, funding opportunities, and interaction with elected officials and members of the community. Mrs. Nelson is responsible for all departments and currently provides line responsibility for the following specific areas: Special Events and Media, Information and Technology, Procurement and Asset Management, Fleet Services, and Parks and Recreation.

Biography
Mrs. Nelson has over 15 years of leadership experience. Her most noted local accomplishment has been transitioning the management of our parks system from Miami-Dade County in 2004 and subsequently, becoming the first Parks and Recreation Director for the City of Miami Gardens.

Prior to joining this team, Ms. Nelson worked in management positions with both the federal government and the private sector for seven and six years, respectively.

Mrs. Nelson serves as Vice-Chair of YWCA of Greater Miami-Dade County, serves as an advisory board member for the Boys and Girls Club of Carver Ranches, and is an active member of the following organizations: National Forum for Black Administrators, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated, Florida City and County Management Association, and American Society for Public Administration.
