Starting on Monday September 9th, 2019, local youth and community members in Miami Gardens will be offered group therapy sessions free of charge and led by renowned clinical therapist Dr. LaTasha Russell. This initiative, brought to life by Mayor Oliver Gilbert, will provide a chance for kids and teens ages 5–18 years old to explore conflict resolution and anger management solutions. Three program cycles of 12 weekly sessions are scheduled to be held at the Betty T. Ferguson Recreation Complex, 3000 NW 199th St., Miami Gardens, FL 33056. Sessions and are already planned to continue well into 2020 and will be held on Monday evenings from 6:00 pm–7:00 pm for children 11 years old and younger and from 7:00 pm–8:00 pm for teenagers ages 12 – 18. The group therapy curriculum includes but is not limited to topics such as identifying feelings, expressing anger, recovering from trauma, the importance of self-regulating and developing coping skills.
“We all know that it takes a village to raise a child, well this is our village taking action. We want to ensure that our kids and our teenagers have a safe space not only to express themselves, but to learn. We are taking action in making sure that the youth in our community are empowered to navigate through tough real-life situations and can safely and effectively process their emotions and self-reflection.” spoke Mayor Gilbert when describing the upcoming program.
The City of Miami Gardens is proud to collaborate with Dr. Latasha Russell for this initiative. As a well-rounded clinical psychologist, Dr. Tasha has provided therapy for families, groups, couples and individuals across the country and also right here in South Florida. Group therapy provides the opportunity for kids to relate to one another in an open setting and serves as a source of support, especially for youth dealing with bullying, anxiety and other mental health issues.
