of Councilmember Aaron Campbell, Jr.
Aaron Campbell Jr., is a native Miamian. After spending a tour
of duty in the United States Air Force, he returned to Miami where he began his
career in law enforcement with the Miami-Dade Police Department. He progressed through
the ranks during his 31 years with the department, to the rank of Major. He was
assigned to a variety of units within the Department, his last assignment being
district Commander for the Carol City District (now the Miami Gardens District).
He obtained an Associates Degree in Police Science from Miami-Dade Community College,
and a Bachelors Degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University.
He is a graduate of the Federal Bureau of Investigation National Academy, and attained
a graduate study Certificate in Public Administration at Florida International University.
He has received numerous awards and commendations in recognition of his services
and performance of duty.
Aaron Campbell is an outstanding member of the Miami-Dade County Public Schools
5000 Role Models of Excellence. He has been recognized by members of the Miami Dade
County Board of County Commissioners, coworkers, citizens, and members of numerous
community based organizations, for his commitment and contributions to the welfare
and betterment of the community. He has a professional reputation for being non-traditional
in his leadership style, and an innovator of programs to improve the relation between
the police and community. Two examples are: the comprehensive program he developed
that reduced the level of street corner drug sales in Miami Dade’s public housing
developments; and the development, training, and implementation of the Miami Dade
Police Department’s Community Oriented Policing Program (COPS). He is well known
throughout Miami-Dade County for working in partnerships with Crime Watch and Homeowners
Associations in solving community programs.
Aaron Campbell was appointed by the Miami-Dade County Board of Commissioners to
serve as a member of the North Dade Municipal Advisory Committee. The purpose of
the committee was to conduct a study into the incorporation of a new city within
the North Miami-Dade County area. He later was elected to be the first District
#1 Councilmember and Vice Mayor for the City of Miami Gardens.
Aaron Campbell is a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church of Carol City.
He is a Life member of National Association for the Advancement of Colored People
(NAACP). He is married and has two adult children. He is also the author a book
titled. “And Justice for Some”.
